Let’s talk EXTREMES.

They can be totally divine, y’know?

I’m talking : SUPER tart passionfruit, XXTRA Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, ICY cold showers, BLAZING hot weather.

Basically, some of my absolute faves.

But when it comes to my diet, I’ve found that I DO NOT want to mess around w/ extremes … On one end of the spectrum there’s over-eating. On the other, there’s starvation.

What I want & what I swear by is the sweet, middle stuff : MODERATION.

Like hell ya I want to look good – but I’m not about teetering on an imbalanced diet when there’s a MUCH more viable option that promises me health & wellness & just everything sunny in life.

I swear by moderation because it’s all about playing the LONG GAME – & the long game leads to lasting impact + results. & when it comes to health + wellness, nothing is more important than a change in lifestyle & mindset.

No quick fixes, no easy hacks, NO extreme 7-day weight loss – I always like to say that it takes time to gain weight, so it’ll definitely take time to lose it as well. Patience is key!

It takes time to gain weight, so it’ll take time to lose weight.

So what does happen when someone ditches the long game & looks for a “quick fix”? Let’s find out …

Why Starvation Just Doesn’t Work …

… At least not for me.

I think it’s hard sometimes when it comes to health & wellness not to sound preachy – & honest to God that’s not what I’m trying to do at all!

I love using this platform to share what works for ME – but if something else seems to work better for you?

Then you do YOU.

Anyway something that I’ve always heard when it comes to weight loss is that it comes from the calculated process of calorie restriction. Eat under a 2,000 cal diet, consistently? The LBs will drop.

The thing is, people who want to play the short game look for an easy way out : “If I eat as little as possible, I’ll be skinny by the time X event comes around.”

Or “I’m at a weight loss plateau – maybe it’s time I really cut down & stop eating to continue losing weight.”

No, no, no.
Just not ideal – AT ALL.

In truth, starvation is NEVER a permanent thing. We all need sustenance to live – food is a part of us! Realistically, yeah those mindsets would cause weight loss. But not even exaggerating : at least 75% of that loss is just water weight.

& all that effort is put in for what to happen, exactly? STARVATION MODE.

WTF is starvation mode? Exactly what it sounds like.

Basically think of your body as a castle – if something’s persistently trying to attack it, ALL of the defenses would be put up … to the point where all resources end up running out.

Kind of a drastic / rando analogy, but y’know. Trying to be creative here – HA.

… Also I’ve been watching too much Reign. I started watching it in Paris & got hopelessly addicted – BADASS women in that show which I absolutely love! Not very historically accurate, but y’know, you learn to get over it – because again, BADASS WOMEN.

Very on-brand.

OK back on topic … basically starvation mode includes all of the following in a nasty lil’ package :

☀️ a lowered metabolism

Your metabolic set rate is the rate at which your bod burns off calories … but by starving, your body wouldn’t be able to expend energy in order to process foods into nutrients, meaning that it wouldn’t be doing any work.

& what happens when something isn’t worked on? It decreases in efficiency.

Bottom line? DON’T LET YOUR BODY BE LAZY.

☀️ a decrease in lean body mass a.k.a. muscle

Eating below the minimum in calories ( generally 1,200 cals for women & 1,500 cals for men ) means that during a workout, there’s nothing left to burn … except some hard-earned muscles.

Which is so counterproductive, no?

I mean, what’s the point of compromising one thing for another – trading off weight loss for muscle loss?

I would seriously be so devastated if in the name of weight loss, I lost muscle that I worked so hard to build up!

& we all know health + weight loss isn’t just what’s depicted on the scale. It’s what you feel & what you see.

☀️ a huge decrease in energy

This one goes without saying – but I might as well get into it.

Basically everything you eat throughout the day is converted into literal energy. It’s like all that shit you learn in biology class – IT’S REAL.

So if I starved myself I would have 0 energy … which would absolutely KILL me because I cannotttt pull off the sluggish, tired look. Plus my ambition levels would drop because I would have no energy to do anything … like what even would happen to TSL?

It’s like one of those drastic things you see on Twitter about how if you lose your pen you end up failing life – LOL. Like if I starved myself my life would 100% be over.

It’s all very much dramatic – but again, REAL.

The 3 things I pointed out? That’s just the tip of the iceberg – there’s so much more down that road ( for a part 2 post, maybe? 😉 )

… & that’s why I’d never starve myself just to look good. It’s certainly not worth the pain, the struggle, & the DRAMA.

For funsies, share your fave skinny tip w/ me in the comments! Mine is to drink a shitload of water, ALWAYS.

& if you’ve made it this far into my semi-nonsensical ramblings – you’re a total babe & I appreciate you so much. xo!

I so agree, moderation is key! I don’t want to be hangry and I’m not going to starve myself. I even more agree with moderation at Disney when I stuff my face with all my Disney favorites. 😍

Preach! I can’t believe there was ever a time I thought starving myself was a good idea either! I’m all about intuitive eating and BALANCE!

Haha love this post! I have been dancing all my life, working as a professional dancer as well as a dance teacher. Therefore I move my body a lot and my metabolism is fast and I need to eat a lot of food = I am always hungry 😉
I think if you keep the balance of working out, eating healthy but indulging from time to time, nothing can go wrong!
And let’s be honest – a little chocolate makes you happy 😉
    Sending love from Austria!

I agree, moderation is key. Quick fix is too good to be true. Things that worth it take time 🙂

Yay! That’s literally my mantra – nothing worth it is ever easy! xx

You are absolutely right! I couldn’t agree more that moderation is the key to maintaining a healthy weight. I have never been able to stick to a starvation diet or any other strict diet. They just don’t work because life happens and so many of these diets are just fads that fade pretty darn fast. Thank you so much for creating such a helpful, positive post!

Moderation and tracking calories in vs. calories out is really the only way to lose weight (if that’s even the end goal). Starvation is never the answer! I’ve lost 75 lbs just moderating what I eat on a daily basis and haven’t felt like I have had to starve myself even once

YAY Cat – you go girl!!! That’s awesome & I’m so happy for you! Moderation is EVERYTHING. ♡
